India's first 'Make in India' blockchain smartphone is on the way. Indian technology firm FESSChain has announced that it will launch the country's first blockchain smartphone this month, with two handsets in a lineup called the InBlock Series arriving by the end of the month. The phones are being introduced under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's self-reliant India (Aatmnirbhar Bharat) campaign.
FESSChain is positioning the secure series to promote the 'Vocal for Local' message. The first two handsets target mid-range users, and the company says it will follow up with phones for premium users later.
What the India's first make blockchain phones offer
The InBlock smartphones run on Android OS and lean on security as their main selling point. FESSChain frames them as a one-stop way to access digital trading, exchanges and wallets, with the goal of making any digital transaction more secure.
Based on the design FESSChain has showcased, here is what buyers can expect from the first two models:
- Android operating system
- AI features built in
- On-screen (in-display) fingerprint sensor
- Autofocus camera
- A Penta camera set-up with LED flash on the back
- A punch-hole display panel on the front
- Direct access to digital trading, exchanges and wallets
Key specifications are still under wraps. FESSChain says details such as the processor, RAM and full camera specifications will be confirmed at the launch event. If you follow the wider phones market, this is one Indian launch worth tracking.
What is blockchain technology?
Blockchain has been a talking point among investors worldwide for the past couple of years, largely through cryptocurrency and bitcoin. Blockchain is the technology used in bitcoin, but it is not the same thing as cryptocurrency.
At its core, blockchain is used to build secure digital transaction systems in many different ways. It enables secure digital transactions and helps guard against digital and online fraud. Because it blocks the chain of online fraud, it is called blockchain technology.
Why it matters for buyers
For everyday users, the pitch is simple: a phone that bundles trading, exchange and wallet access while putting secure transactions front and centre. Whether that promise holds up will be clearer once FESSChain reveals the full hardware details at launch.
