Finnish company HMD Global, known for manufacturing and selling Nokia phones, has quietly launched a new smartphone. Surprisingly, this time the phone is not under the HMD name, but in partnership with African fintech company M-Kopa, called the M-Kopa X30.
HMD and M-Kopa have been working to make smartphones available in Africa for the past few years. M-Kopa is known for its pay-as-you-go financing model, which allows customers to purchase a phone without paying the full price and pay for it in easy monthly installments. In this partnership, HMD handles the hardware and software, while M-Kopa handles distribution and financing. The aim is to make phones accessible to as many people in Africa as possible through affordable installments.
Talking about the specifications of the M-Kopa X30, it is powered by a Unisoc T615 processor, paired with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The phone runs on Android 15, with HMD’s own AI features. It features a 6.72-inch FHD+ display (2400×1080 pixels) with support for a 60Hz refresh rate.
The phone’s rear panel features a 50-megapixel primary camera with OIS support, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The front of the phone features a 50-megapixel high-resolution selfie camera, which is a unique feature in this price segment.
The camera also features AI-based features such as AI Remix Shots, which selects the best expression for each person in a group photo, and Gesture Selfie, which allows users to click photos simply by blinking or showing the peace sign.
